ZANESVILLE — Fred M. Finnen, 76, of Zanesville, died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at his home.

He was born Sept. 2, 1924, in New Lexington, son of the late William and Helen (Stine) Finnen.

Mr. Finnen was a 1942 graduate of New Lexington High School.

He retired in September 1989 from the Kroger Co., where he served as a store manager in Cambridge, Lancaster and Zanesville for 43 years.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served from 1942-46 as staff sergeant.

He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Karl Finnen and Paul Finnen.

He leaves his wife, Jennie Rose (Hickman) Finnen of the home, whom he married April 27, 1945; two daughters, Mrs. Edgar (Carol) Smith of Washington Court House, and Mrs. Fred (Penny) Dilley of Cambridge; two sons, Fred (Sarah) Finnen II of Newark, and Patrick (Maureen) Finnen of Lexington; nine grandchildren, Amy (Toby) Settles, Paul Smith, Fred Dilley, Jennifer Dilley, Michelle (Robb) Dilley-Walrath, Daphne Finnen, Fred Finnen III, Patrick Finnen and Soibhan Finnen; two great-granddaughters, Kennedy and Kassandra Settles; four brothers, William Finnen of Cincinnati, George Finnen of Lancaster, Gerald Finnen of Raleigh, N.C., and Leo Finnen of Minster; a sister, Mrs. Bob (Marilyn) Schumacher of Lancaster; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Karl (Martha) Finnen of Cincinnati, and Mrs. Henry (Clara) Hickman of Lancaster.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hillis Funeral Home, Zanesville. A Christian vigil service will be 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Michael DeTemple officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Zanesville.

     Howard H Kellenbarger witnessed the burial of * Martin W Kellenbarger at Bethel Cemetery, Fairfield, OH. Howard H Kellenbarger was born on 30 June 1935. He was the son of * Martin W Kellenbarger and Esther Thomason. Howard H Kellenbarger was a witness when Esther Thomason was Dwight retold the story to Rick and Lida Jackson while looking at a picture of the old home: "My mother would fix lunch for grandpa working in the shop. This single story section was the kitchen but at the time it had a porch on it...she heard the baby crying. She was fixing Grandpa's lunch and figured she'd go ahead and fix his lunch then get the baby and feed him. As she stepped out of the kitchen into [the part with two stories] she saw fire fall down through the ceiling [from the upper story]. Mother and Dad's bedroom is a little lean-to on the back - where they and Howard normally slept. For some reason or another she said she took the baby and laid him on the bed upstairs [in Dorothy, Harold, Geraldine and Dwight's room]. As she opened the stair door to go up fire flew out in her face. She rushed up through the fire and got the baby. When she started back down the top stairs had burn away and she fell down to the turnoff in the stairway. She got burned so bad - she had red hair hanging to her rear end - it was burned to a crisp - and it burnt her arms so bad the first time they dressed it they exposed a bone. Someone took the baby to the hospital and he lived 3 hours. Mother was in the hospital 30 days. on 13 December 1935 at Fire consumed home.. Howard H Kellenbarger died on 13 December 1935 at age 0.
