(cont. from Suffolk Times article of August 10, 2000)
The Old Place was first situated 300 yards east of New Suffolk Avenue, roughly where Wickham's Fruit Farm is today, according to Mr. Grathwohl. Around 1815 it was moved across the street, where Ivy League Flower and Gifts now stands.
In those days, he said, farmers would spend what they could to build a house. As they prospered the custom was to either deed the old house to a family member - a son or a daughter - and build a new one, or extensively renovate and expand the old one.
The Fleet connection
Mary Holland a descendant of Augustine Fleet (1806-1846), and her son, Matthew, are the last generation of Fleets on the North Fork. She provided a genealogical record that shows Joshua Well's great-granddaughter, Sarah (1767-1838), married John Fleet in 1789. Her father, John (1729-1797), owned the Old Place when the British seized it.
Before his death in 1797 he left lands known as Pequash Neck to his daughter Abigail, the wife of Joseph Hull Goldsmith, and Poole's Neck to his other daughters, Hannah and Sarah. William Wells first received them for his services in negotiating the 1667 treaty with the Corchaug Indians to extend Southold's boundaries.
Sarah and John Fleet had a son, Joshua, before John died in 1790. Sarah later married Ransler Fleet (1763-1812), John's cousin, and had two sons, Augustine and John. Hannah deeded to Sarah her share of the land in 1818, and Sarah, in turn, deeded to Augustine that portion on Feb. 23, 1838. Sarah's own half went to Joshua, who deeded the 200 acres to Augustine on Oct. 21, 1829. Thus the Wells property came into the Fleet family and was thereafter known as Fleet's Neck.
Sarah's son Joshua then married a woman named Frances (last name unknown), aka 'Madam Fleet,' according to Ms. Holland.
Mr. Grathwohl said the new Ms. Fleet 'wanted a modern house' and hired craftsmen from New York City to renovate it - around 1815 - to the then-popular Federal style.
Although much has been made of Ms. Fleet's motivation to do so, Mrs. Holland credits her 'with fixing up the house,' This is shown by the attention to detail still evident today - the five hand-carved mantelpieces, molding, dormer windows and the front door, which has its original eagle knocker.
The 'new' owners
The house left Fleet hands in 1857 when Henry Landon Fleet (1832-1894), son of Augustine and Rhoda Terry Fleet - and a horse breeder and farmer - sold it to Orrin T. Goldsmith - the great nephew of Sarah Wells Fleet's sister Abigail and a direct descendant of John Goldsmith, whose wife was Anna Wells, sister of the Old Place's builder. Right after the sale it was moved a quarter of a mile during a week's period to its present location, on 1.7 acres, with the help of 20 oxen.
According to a later owner, Athelstane Kendrick, whose wife was a niece of Mr. Goldsmith's, the family said the house 'suffered not the slightest damage in the journey despite the fact that it was moved complete with chimney...an indication...(of) its own remarkable solidity.'
Mr. Kendrick's wife inherited the place from her cousin, Oliver Benjamin Goldsmith, in 1924. Their daughter, Connie Kendrick Overton, sold the house in 1965 to Elizabeth Vernon and Angelina Ferro of New York City. Ms. Vernon rented the house from that time until February before deciding to put it on the market.
When Mr. Grathwohl found out through sources the house was up for grabs in March he said he called 'the next day and sealed the deal.' The official closing date was Wednesday, July 25.
Although he'''s a Virginia resident, Mr. Grathwohl still has family in Cutchogue and would eventually like to move back. He plans to create a 'before and after' Chamber of Commerce house tour to mark his restoration progress.
'I want it to be a showplace, so give me five years or so,' he said. He Person Source.1 He Person Source.2 Unrecognized GEDCOM data: Unknown GEDCOM tag: _UID B6C21366D2D4D611BFCA0800460222F069DF.
'The 'Old Place' Circa 1680 house welcomes a new caretaker, by Laura Rydin.
Cutchogue - The 'Old Place' has seen it all, from a British seizure in February 1778 to the front page of the New York Times in 1965. The circa 1680s double Cape Cod house on New Suffolk Avenue, across and down from the fire station, will soon take on a new life at the hands of Jim Grathwohl.
The longtime chairman of the board of the 'Old House' on the Village Green in Cutchogue recently purchased the home and plans to faithfully restore it.
'I want to do it right....I'd like to put it on the National Register of Historic Places,' said Mr. Grathwohl, who's also a founder of the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council.
Until it was sold in 1965, which prompted the New York Times article, it housed Wells family descendants for around 285 years. Joshua Wells (1664-1744), the second son of one of Southold's founding f athers, William Wells (1605-1671), built the house around 1680, but more likely in 1686 when he married Hannah Tuthill at age 22. Their son Fregift used the same style to build his home in 1753 (featured in the July 13 Suffolk Times).
