JOHN TUTHILL, son of John and Mehitable (Wells) Tuthill, died in Southold, June 29, 1743, aged 60 years. He married Elizabeth whose parentage has not been definitely settled, but perhaps she was a daughter of Jonathan Browne. His will dated June 9, 1740, proven Aug. 6, 1745 is filed in New York City. In it he mentions his wife Elizabeth and wishes her to send their son Samuel to College. He states that Jonathan is his eldest son and bequeaths him land in the Highlands which is now located in the vicinity of West Point. He names his other sons as John, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Nathan and his daughters as Elizabeth Terry, Hannah, and Mary Brown leaving the latter one hundred acresof land near her brother Jonathan and also his property west of John Robinson's land lying in Brookhaven, L. I. He gives '3/4 of a right in the Manor land for the upholdidng of a preached Gospel at the Wading River, forever.' He made his brother Joshua Tuthill, his brother Joseph Browne and his son John Tuthill his executors.

'576. Savage says Francis Lambert, of Rowley, was probably the father of Gershom Lambert, who settled in Stonigton, Conn., some time before 1698; but the first deed of his recorded there is of that date, in which he sells much land to John Seabury, of Duxborough, Plymouth Co., Mass. Deeds are aso found as late as 1728, not only to Seabury, but to his sons and others. In one deed dated 1705 he mentions lands received from his father-in-law from John Frink. In another deed in 1727 he conveys to his three sons: John, Gershom, Jr., and Jabez Lambert. In 1725 Deborah and Jabez Lambert convey to Nathaniel Cheesbrough. The conveyance is signed by Deborah, Jabez, Mary, and Abigail Lambert. On the town records of Stonington, Conn., are the following children to Gershom Lambert: John, born Aug. 10, 1687; Mary, born Jan. 30, 1690-1; Jabez, born Oct. 1700; Abigail, born Dec. 23, 1706. On the records of the First Congregational church at Stonington are the following baptsims: John Lambert, son of Gershom, baptized July 8, 1688; Deborah daughter of gershom, bapt. Oct. 5, 1690; Mary, daughter of Gershom, bapt. March 16, 1700; Abigail daughter of Gershom, bapt. May _ 1707. Then we have from deeds, church and town records, that Gershom Lambert married _____Frink, daughter of John. His children were John, Gershom, Mary, Jabez, Deborah and Abigail. Another record states that John Lambert (probably the above born 1687) was married by the Rev. Ebenezer Pemberton, pastor of a church in Boston, 25 June, 1713, to Abigail Hempstead (the name may be Bumpstead). They had children: John, born Feb., __1714-5; Gershom, born Dec. 28, 1715; Abigail, baptized May 3, 1719. I do not find that this John had other children. Can any one tell which of these two Abigails married John Tuthill, of Sterling (now Greenport), Nov. 14, 1744? See my notes below on
'Glover Lambert. In deed 1724 of William Glover (now resident of Stonington') to Nathaniel Cheesbrough, he sells land bought from his brother-in-law John Lambert, which he inherited from his father Gershom. I have records that Wiliam Glover married Deborah Lambert Oct. 29, 1712, and had children: William, born 1713; Deborah, Sarah, Daniel, John, born 1721, and Phebe, 1724. The Stonighton records give Phebey, daughter of William and Deborah Glover, as March 6, 1724. From another source I learn that William Glover, Jr., born 1713, was born at Southold, L.I., and married Mary Fanning, April 8, 1751. They removed to Plainfield, Conn., and then to Norwich, where he died in 1788. He left seven children. Anna married Erastus (?) Perkins; Mary, Prentice Peabody; Nathan, Desire Avery (?) William, lost at sea; James went to Oxford, N.Y., and finally became an early settler of Ottawa, Ill; Phebe married John Brown and died in the West Indies. From these various records we learn that William Glover married Deborah Lambert (daughter of Gershom) and that their eldest son was born at Southold in 1713, an that said William became, according to deeds, a resident of Stonington, Conn., about 1723, and his daughter Phebe was born there the following year. Can any one tell when this William died? and was it not his widow Deborah who married John Tuthill (widower), father of the John Tuthill who married Abigail Lambert?
'I am inclined to think instead of the two sisters (Deborah and Abigail Lambert) marrying the two Tuthills, that it was Aunt Deborah and niece Abigail, for I learn that Abigail (probably daughter of 1st John Lambert), baptized 1707, married Jonathan Whitaker and resided near Norwixh, Conn. So in all probability the Abigail (daughter of John son of Gershom) baptized May 3, 1719, is the one who married John Tuthill, Jr., and her aunt Deborah married John Tuthill, Sr.' (The Long Island Traveler, Fiche #6016168, pg 172.). Her married name was Tuthill. She was born in 1719 at Stonington, Connecticut. She was the daughter of John Lambert. Abigail Lambert was christened on 3 May 1719. She married John Tuthill, son of John Tuthill III and Elizabeth Browne, on 15 November 1744.1 Abigail Lambert died on 8 September 1751 at Oysterponds, Suffolk, New York, at age 32.

Freegift Tuthill Al Cavalari

Freegift TUTHILL was born on 8 Aug 1698 in Southold, Long Island, NY. He died in Sep 1765 in Goshen, Orange County, NY. He is the one who moved up here to Orange County, NYfrom Long IslandHe and other family members, including grandson Joshua Tuthill are buried in the plot behind my house. I live in the house they built on what is left of the 400 acre farm
Built by one of Orange County New York's founding families
Originally part of a 400 acre tract purchased by Freegift Tuthill in 1730. He was born 1698 in Southhold, Suffolk County, Long Island
Sources conflict. A log house was built in 1732 and then a stone house in 1744. Or the stone house was built in 1733. Its location remains unknown. All seem to agree that the stone house was torn down in 1814 when the present house was built.
Freegift, his wife Abigal, and various other family members are buried out back in a family cemetery. Pictures of the gravestones will be added to this site as well as more pictures of the house's details. The house is about 2900 sqft has 4 fireplaces and two outbuildings.
Freegift died in Sept 1765.
It is interesting to give his lifetime a context: The Stamp Act, which was the first event that really spawned the colonial agitation leading to the American Revolution, was not even to go into effect until November 1st of that year. Freegift Tuthill was a English colonist at a time when separation from The United Kingdom would have seemed as imaginable as a moon landing to most people. England's last of four colonial wars with France, The French and Indian war, had only just ended in 1763. His son, Freegift Jr. died in that war at age 25. The Tuthill's were not yet Americans. They were English colonists.
It is believed that Freegift's grandson, Joshua, built the current house. He also rests out back.
The Tuthill name remains prominent in Orange and Ulster counties. There is at least one business, at least one road, and a hamlet bearing the name.

Both Freegift and Abigail were born as English colonists some 60-70 years before anyone ever dreamed of separating from the British empire. When they were born, English settlements were a tiny ribbon of colonization barely clinging to the Atlantic coast line.
Freegift's will was witnessed by Thomas, John and William Ellison whose name is important in the history of the Town of New Windsor. Their family home exists there today and is commonly known as Knox's Headquarters. It served as the HQ of Continental Army General William Henry Knox and General St. Clair.. - [S689] Unknown author, Terry Family Historian, pg. 4

Freegift purchased a 400 acre tract here in 1730. He moved his family here in 1733
Both Freegift and Abigail were born as English colonists some 60-70 years before anyone ever dreamed of separating from the British empire.

William Wells, who was second to none in influence, is said to have come from England June 19, 1635 in the same ship with John Bayley, another of the early settlers. The first notice of him on Long Island is the following entry in the records of Southampton: 'March 15th, 1643...' In 1646 his name appears in the same records among a list of men who had evidently abandoned the settlement. The exact time at which he became a settler at Southold is unknown, but he was a resident here before 1649. He was a native of Norwich, England, and was born in 1608. Throughout his life he was the legal authority of the town, and pre-eminently the business man of the place, and it was through him that the purchases were made from the Indians of the region of Cuchogue, Mattituck and Ockahock, including the town of Riverhead. As the inscription on his tomb narrates, he was a 'justice of the peace and first sheriff of Yorkshire,' being appointed to that position by Governor Nicolls in 1664. He died November 13, 1671, aged sixty-three and left a wife Mary, who afterward married Thomas Mapes. His first wife, Bridget, was the widow of Henry Tuthill, and had the following children: William, Joshua, Mary, Bethia, and Mehetabel. His tomb may still be seen in the old burial ground, and after a lapse of two centuries is in a perfect state of preservation thanks to the reverant care of his descenant, the late William H. Wells. The magnificent genealogical work, 'William Wells, of Southold, and his Descendants,' by Rev. Charles Wells Hayes, contains a full account of this illustrious man and his family.. - [S660] Unknown author, Southold Presbyterian Cemetery, Here lies ye body of William Wells of Southold, Gent., Justice of y Peace & First Sheriff of New Yorke Shire upon Long Island, who departed this Life Nove 13, 1671 aged 63.
