George Overmeyer1,2
M, d. 23 December 1812
George Overmeyer was New Tag A BIOGRAPHY OF GEORGE (III) OVERMIRE, by Larry Overmire (5th great grandson):
George (III) was born on the Pennsylvania frontier in 1755 in the midst of the French and Indian War, as has been said "while Indians were attacking their neighbors." His mother Eva died when he was only about 4 years old. His father quickly remarried to provide a mother for the children. She was Anna Barbara Vogt (Fought/Foucht).
The hardships of frontier life provided little, if any, opportunity for education for young George. He moved with his parents and siblings to Northumberland county when he was about 15.
In 1776, he served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Capt. John Clarke's 1st Co., 4th Battalion, Northumberland Co. PA militia. His father was Captain of the 6th Company. They were involved in skirmishing and other operations following Gen. Washington's inspiring victories at Trenton and Princeton.
As early as Easter 1805, George and his family appear in the records as members of Mr. Early's congregation at Emanuel's Church at the Loop of Tusseyville, PA. In 1809, George and Mary were the sponsors of their granddaughter Leah's [daughter of George IV] baptism.
On the 22nd of September in 1805, George's father died. He and his half-brother Michael became executors of the will, completing settlement of the estate in 1810. George (III) was bequeathed his father's Revolutionary War sword, obviously a prized item (which his descendants are trying to locate, so far in vain).
In the meantime, most of George's siblings had moved to Ohio, the western frontier at that time, settling in what was known as Overmyertown in what became Perry Co. George, his wife Mary, and their 11 children moved there as well in 1811, the last of the brothers to do so. He had barely settled in Perry Co., apparently on the NW 1/4 section of Jackson Township, when he died. He and his wife are buried in New Reading Cemetery in Perry Co., their tombstones still standing proudly, and well worth the visit by their many descendants.2 He and Mary (Anna Maria) Rearick Had 11 Children.1,2 George Overmeyer married Mary (Anna Maria) Rearick on 22 September 1783 at Paxton Twp., Dauphin, PA.2 George Overmeyer died on 23 December 1812 at Reading Twp, Perry, OH.2 He was Vol. F, Pg. 93:
"This deed made this 8th day of October, 1832, between John Wolf, Sr. and Elizabeth, his wife -- Peter Overmier and Mary, his wife -- Peter Strohl and Sally, his wife -- Michael Dittoe and Barbara his wife -- and Nancy Overmier and Levi Overmier and wife, all heirs of George Overmeyer, deceased, late of Jackson Township of Perry County, Ohio, parties of the first part, and John Wolf and James Palmer, parties of the second part. Witnesseth; That whereas George Overmeyer died seized in fee simple of the NW 1/4 Section 10 Jackson Township leaving a widow and eleven (11) children, heirs to whom the same descended at law as tenants in common, of which quarter section John Wolf and wife, Elizabeth, in right of his wife, daughter of said Overmeyer are entitled to 1/11; Peter Overmier, son of said George, 1/11; Peter Strohl, in right of his wife, Sally, formerly Sally Overmier, to 1/11; Michael Ditto and Barbara, his wife, formerly Barbara Overmier, to 1/11; and by purchase from John Overmier, Jacob Overmier, Jacob Emerich and wife Eve, formerly Overmier, and Mary Overmier, heirs of George Overmeyer, Sr. aforesaid to 4/11 and Nancy Overmier and Levi Overmier entitled each to "1/5 of 1/11" as each one of five (5) heirs of George Overmier, Jr., deceased, and was a son of George Overmeyer, Sr. aforesaid intestate. Now therefore, the parties of the first part in consideration of $300.00 to them paid by John Wolf and James Palmer, of the second part aforesaid, have give, granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do give unto John Wolf and James Palmer and their heirs in fee simple all right, claim and title in aforesaid quarter section of land.” on 8 October 1832 at Land Transfer Deed, New Lexington, Perry, OH.3,2 He was buried after 8 October 1832; GEORGE'S TOMBSTONE, by Larry Overmire
George is buried in New Reading Cemetery next to his wife Mary who died at the age of 70. The inscription on his headstone reads "George Overmyer died Dec. 23, 1812, aged 57 yrs. 6 mos. and 20 days." It is curious that the headstones of George and his wife Mary match: they are made with identical stone in the same style, and spell the surname "Overmyer." George died in 1812. The other markers of that early period are made of inferior stone and not wearing well, yet George and Mary's stones are in excellent condition. This suggests that the stones were probably cut upon the death of Mary in 1835, George's original stone having been replaced. It is also curious that the surname is spelled "Overmyer," a spelling which seems to have been adopted by later generations, and though it may have been used at the time of Mary's death in 1835, it was probably not used by George himself. Indeed, most of George and Mary's children seem to have gone by the spelling "Overmier" or "Overmire," if, in fact, there was a preference.2
