He witnessed the death of Nancy Atkins on 4 March 1864.⁵ Daniel Atkins was buried after 6 March 1864 at Atkins Cemetery (Atkins Methodist Church); "In the spring of 1862 Daniel and Elizabeth’s home was visited by the dread disease, smallpox and most of the family was stricken. On March 6th, Elizabeth died. A coffin was taken by friends to a safe distance from the home as the congregation watched, with tears in their eyes, as Daniel, one of the two sons, and Dr. Carson, the attending physician carried and placed the coffin in the tomb at Atkins Cemetery."^6,7 He died on 20 October 1882 at age 83.^8,9 He was buried after 20 October 1882 at Atkins Methodist Church.⁷
