     Louise Kellenberger was born on 29 September 1805 at Georgetown, DC.¹ She was the daughter of George Kellenberger and Elizabeth Simmer.¹ Louise Kellenberger died on 5 August 1812 at age 6.¹

     Lewis Kellenberger Lewis came from his Virginia home by way of Ohio and
Mississippi rivers. He was employed by Joan Doan & Co. St Louis
Merchants. He travelled for them for some time, making his rounds
on horse-back and carrying his samples in his saddle bags. At the
end of a few years he embarked in real estate and insurance in
company with his oldest son George K. later admitting to
partnership his son-in-law Dr.McKinney. He died at the age of 74
years a respected and honoured man.

Lewis K 2nd) written 27-8-1850. 'AD' added and Thursday inserted
over Wednesday crossed out. From Chicago, on trip to Buffalo with
his father, apparently by canal, mentions 'leaving the canal
boat' and talks about their boat leaving tomorrow. Describes
Chicago, houses of wood, streets paved, 'with planks' (perhaps
meaning a plank sidewalk, as later described in Alton in diary)
but covered in mud and water.' The only thinsg worth seing was
the harbour, 'with many vessels, both sail and steam.' American
Temperance House, where they are staying 'sets most miserable
table.' 'If Temperance means the total abstinence from the
necessities, not the conveniences of life, it is about right.'
However they had an excellent dinner with the de Wolffs,
relatives of the Padlefords, his stepmother's family, who had
come to Alton with them from Massachusetts. He mentions his
pleasure at seeing 'all the little children' around their table.
His affection for his step siblings is clear from his messages
to them - 'tell the children to be as good as ever, or they won't
grow up as I have done.' His ending from 'your affectionate son,
George Smith Kellenberger' shows GSK to have been on equally
relaxed and loving terms with herself.
