From grave markers and burial records
at St. Joseph Church in Perry Co., OH we know
of the brothers Jacob, Joseph and Anthony Dittoe:
Jacob (1760-1826), wife Catherine; probably SNEERINGER
but possibly FINCK (c. 1764-1853).
Joseph (1758-1831), wife Helen/Ellen/Eleanor Grimm
or Grim.
Anthony (1765-1854), never married.
From Conewago Chapel records we
see Baptisms of Jacob and Joseph's children between 1795-1803.
Riley's History of the Ditto
Families 1700-2000 shows us a Jacob Dittoe,
and wife Catherine, who transacted
10 deeds in northwest Baltimore Co., MD between
1789 and 1803. Between 1802 and 1804 they sold at least 7
of them and left the area.
Riley also brings to our attention a record from
the Orphan Court Docket of
York Co., PA 29 May 1772 regarding the estate of the deceased
Barbara Deeto. This document names her beneficiaries as John (eldest
son), Jacob, Francis, Joseph, Peter, Anthony, Catherine and Mary,
some of which are minors.
While many sources are cited, it is not clear who
gave what, but this same family is said to be that of Joseph
DeToe, of Alsace, France. A descendancy chart is given that is
very similar to part of the family described in the 1883
History of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio, and known
from Perry Co. records, however there are contradictions. The
two are compared here:
