These are forms made by Msgr. Durst from 1/4th sections
of 8.5x11 paper. The first
card names the available sources as "1", "2",
"A", "B" and "C", which are exactly
the same materials that were available to us - and described below.
On some of the cards themselves, in the field named "Information
Sources" we see "Orphan's File Card". We're not yet
sure what this means: "File Cards" are not one of the sources
named on the first card
nor is another set of "cards" available as of now.
In this beautiful
oversized old book we find handwritten records in German, author
unknown. The book of blank but stamp numbered pages was produced by
Siebert & Lilley, Blank Book Manufacturers and General Stationers,
Opera House Building (Upstairs), Columbus, Ohio.
It is clear that when this book was started, the entries were made
from some other unknown, and assumed to be lost, source, as the first
many pages are numbered and for the most part alphabetized. On most
pages there are 5 entries per page. All entries begin with a name.
Some are only a name, while others contain 4-5 lines of
writing. A distinction of 4 "groups" of entries can be seen:
1. The first entry is on page 4 (pages 1-3 are blank): #1, Benedict
Bentz. Following Bentz are entries not exactly in alphabetical order
but at least by C's then D's then E's etc. #45, Willie Williams is
the last entry on page 12.
2. Page 13 begins with #45, John Adolf Bierlinger and, like the preceeding
pages, continues with names grouped by letter through #78, Alexander
Wood, on page 19.
3. The next entry, #79, immediately following #78 on page 19, is
Jos. Specht. After this the entries continue in the same numbered
fashion but are not in any sort of alphabetical order. The entries
continue through #353, John Miller, on page 74.
For each of these preceeding sections, it seems certain that the
numbers were written at the same time as the names and information.
Pages 75-80 were left blank.
4. The entries resume on page 81. These were not originally numbered,
however someone (probably Msgr. Durst) penciled numbers for each one
in the margin, 1-6, 7 or 8 per page. These entries are not in alphabetical
order and end on page 108.
The rest of the book is blank.
** In with xerox copies of the pages of this
book (in file folder "2", below) is the following note:
"Copy of the Orphans'
Record labelled "RECORDS" kept in the office of the Rector.
The original copy of them designated as "A Record" in
our Archives files, is quite apparently a transcribed incomplete
version copied from a more original, similar, earlier record, also
kept in the office of the Rector labelled "B Record" in
our Archives files"
The condition of this book of columns drawn in a blank
hardbound book lead us to believe that the note with the copies of
the "A Record" is correct in stating that this "B Record"
is the older of the two. It is written in English.
The entries in this book use both pages of the open
book, with column titles across the top. In two separate sets of xerox
copies (in the file folder "2", below) there are a variety
of penciled in notes, check marks, etc., apparently jotted as the
compiler of the "A Record" and/or the typed cards went along.
